Gun laws

Or a big thank y'all who stayed home or voted Democratic last election.

S.1331, the "Long-Range Sniper Rifle Safety Act of 2007" by Senator Feinstien, classifies .50 BMG caliber rifles as "destructive devices" under the National Firearms Act, requiring registration when purchased or sold. However, a new "copycat" provision has been added that also prohibits any firearm, regardless of caliber, that develops 12,000 foot-pounds of energy or more. Accordingly, S.1331 will affect many more firearms than those chambered in .50 BMG. Remember what we said last year about "sniper rifles" being next? It's starting. The hearing exploiting Virginia Tech have started -chaired by "F"-rated Rep. Dennis Kucinich - and entitled "Lethal Loopholes." To anti-gun activists, of course, a "loophole" is the lack of any restriction they support, and their testimony bore this out in spades. Brady Campaign president Paul Helmke used his testimony to comment about the dangers of individuals buying or owning an "arsenal" of firearms. Helmke failed to enlighten the committee about how many guns would comprise an "arsenal," though his written testimony suggested it might be as few as ten guns. Helmke also attacked the private sale of guns, claiming that 40% of firearm transactions are off the books and that an unlicensed person "can sell a gun to a criminal or an escaped mental patient, no questions asked." Helmke’s call for California-style controls ignores the results in California itself, which has a murder rate 24% higher than the rest of the country. It gets better.

In Texas, while the CHL Confidentiality Bill is headed to Gov. Perry's desk, big business interests are trying to derail SB 534 which would allow CHLs to keep their weapons in their locked vehicle in their employer's parking lot. The bill is actually models on Southwest Airline's current policy -another reason to favor Texas' airline.  There is apparently a lot of pressure from companies to vote against this. Naturally the executives making that decision don't have to drive home at 2 am. BTW, you got to like Gov. Perry's take on CHL however - he came right out and said you should be able to carry absolutely everywhere.
