The pope is catholic: this is news?
Fox News today reports that the pope reaffirmed the Roman Catholic belief that the Protestant Churches, which split from the Roman Catholic, are not valid churches and that the Orthodox Church, which the Catholics split from, aren't catholic because they don't accept the Pope as their head. Protestant clergy reacte in horror. Hello? Why is this news and who's surprised?
If the Roman Catholic Church accepted the Reformation claims and theology, it won't be a seperate church. The Pope is just restating a 400 year old position. They, like the Orthodox Church, have never accepted Protestant claims as valid. Duh!
Then we get to the Primary of Peter nonsense as making the Orthodox Churches somehow wunded. The claim of one of the ancient Sees that it somehow has a special relationship with God so that the Holy Spirit, so that instead of guiding the Church, He only talks to one man. No mention of the theological monsters that claim both came out of and created. The doctrine was first pushed to change the Creed, then to establish political control of the Church. From it we get such things like Puratogry and Limbo, the Immaculate Conception, Co-Redeemer-ship (however you spell that), priestly celibacy, scholaristism, etc. Despite all these difference, points made by Photius and Mark of Epheus, the Catholics only notice the Primary issue. Again no difference here. The Catholic Church has made the issue one of Primary rather than admitting it changed fundamental doctrines of the Church.
I guess my point is there is absolutly no news in this story. So why the hell is it even being run? I've gotten used to bad coverage of most news. I now have to deal with bad coverage on non-news.
Why yes, I'm grumpy.

I like the stories about the pope being against, say, adultry, or this or that war/atrocity...
"This just in, Dianne...Church still against sin. Full story at 11."
Me too. And my favorite part is they say it is the religious right that says it. Try walking into a AME Zion church, any of which will vote almost 100% Democratic, and telling them homosexuality isn't a sin.
