I went back to the forge today and tried my hand at cable damascus. The cable crumbled and Chuck has no clue why. We'll try again tomorrow along with some simpler welds to check my technique. I did get the hawk ready to heat treat (it's nice and shiny), a twisting wrench, a punch, and a fire rake made, and a set of scrolling tongs almost finished. Sadly we used up the coke so we were running on coal (and Kyli won't come near me now - she sneezes.)
