Math in the Reality Based Community

If you listen to the Democratic primary discussions, you have to wonder who in the party took a math class in high school. The primary system for the democratic side is designed to split delegates selection between the party members, the vested interests and officials of the party. (Odd they do this and the evil Republicans use a simple majority, no?) With both candidates running about 50% of the popular vote, how come we keep hearing calls for one contender or another to quit as they can't in. The system is working the way its supposed to, throwing the decision to the party elders who can then make an informed decision on the most electable candidate. I'm not saying its right or I approve, but that's what this set up does...

The really interesting thing to me is the news slant put on the numbers. Between that and the apparent attempts to use exit polls* (Editor: Do other people lie to pollsters or is it just me?) to apparently influence the vote as they have in the past, I'm beginning to wonder if any math at all is required for a career in journalism. Clinton and O'bama are roughly 5% of the needed votes apart. That's not a big number. Both still need roughly 23% of total delegates to secure the nomination. It's an open market and has been from the beginning...

<sigh>

"What do they teach in schools these days?"

* The Kausfiles and others suggest its just gigo but I tend to assume intentional evil when considering the actions of the press.
