A friend and I were discussing cultural differences and how, in some cultures, a statement that stuck a middle class westerner as bravo wasn't. Growing up as I did among a mixture of ethic groups, there was people you knew who said "I'd kill him" and meant just that.  There were and are sub-cultures where that threat means exactly what was said. Young gringos die on the Texas-Mexico border all the time because they don't get this. The white bread effect, as a friend of mine calls it, gets worse with American elites when they have to deal; with other cultures. Their belief that violence isn't ever really used is sadly a uniquely American middle-class fairy tale.

That said, I haven't ever seen it worse that this.  After being told that the woman with him would be raped if things were just a bit different,  Mr. Slackman is naive enough to write: "Would he really do it? Probably not. And neither would the other young men there, the ones who quietly nodded. But no one said “just kidding.”  That's because you ain't in New York City's West Side anymore, sir.

Believe me, sir, they would. They were serious. They told you the truth. You are a kuffir, she is meat, and you are both damned lucky to be alive. Neither of you have any rights in that culture, but, just as many here choose to ignore the threats of the Jihad against the US, you chose not to believe it as it doesn't fit in your world view.
