Forge Welding -Days 2-3

On day 2, we continued to work on basics in coal forges. Again Randy started with demos and we looked at more types of welds. The loop weld turned out to be used for so much more just making loops as it gives you two tails the same size. I made one and cut it into a poker. We also made some chain and looked at how different steels welds - pure iron, mild steel and high carbon. We finally started to work on the "drop the tongs" weld where the pieces are not touch before welding. I got close but didn't make it.

On Day 3, I switched to gas as only 2 of us use gas forges. I redid some faggot and loop welds and then spent the rest of the time not making the drop the tongs weld work. Near the end of the day, Randy and the school instructor, Derek, tried too. Something seems wrong in the forge as we cann't weld open parts in it. Back to coal tomorrow.

One of my classmates made a braided handle using 1/2 inch stock instead of 1/4 pr 3/8. The final handle was more of a mace head. If he attached to his chain, it would probably work just fine. (for reference, he's a bit bigger than me.)

Dinner was at a Thai place downtown and I passed this memorial park on the way to it.
