Woortz Class in Wisconsin

I'm up in Sturgeon Bay learning to make Woortz from Ric Fuller, on the right below with Larry Harley, ABS Mastersmith from Tennessee who is visiting the class.

It's a lovely little town of 9500 on the peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan...

Lots of farms...

And the trees are starting to turn color...

We started off hammering pure iron out flat, unless you were working from ore or meteorites. Below Howard Clarl, ABS Master Smith, runs a 250 pound power hammer.

which we then ran thru a rolling mill.

We then packed crucibles with iron and a carbon source, then sealed them up. They are then heated to 3000 F for about 90 minutes before removing.

Carefully...

After cooling and chipping out, we get this...

At this point, we have to hammer it into a bar

From there, we'll make the stock needed to form knives...
